Project Overview
The Marsh Road Junction Upgrade project involved the comprehensive improvement and
reprofiling of a key highway junction in Luton, delivered to enhance safety, traffic flow, and
overall network performance for all users including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The
scheme was delivered for Volker Highways on behalf of Luton Borough Council as part of
their ongoing commitment to improving local highway infrastructure and junction safety.
The works comprised junction reprofiling, upgrades to surface water drainage, installation of
new traffic infrastructure, kerbing, paving, and asphalt surfacing. The project was developed
and delivered through early contractor involvement (ECI), enabling collaborative design
development, improved buildability, and efficient delivery on a live highway network.

Our Approach

Early Contractor Involvement (ECI)
The project was developed through an early contractor involvement process, enabling collaborative input from Volker Highways, Luton Borough Council, and the design team. This approach allowed risks to be identified early, buildability to be improved, and construction sequencing to be optimised prior to works commencing.

Safety Management
Safety was embedded into every stage of delivery, with detailed traffic management plans implemented to separate live traffic from construction activities. Traffic Infrastructure Works
A key element of the project was the installation of traffic infrastructure to standards, including:

NAL Sockets: Installed to securely house traffic signal poles and lighting columns, providing reliable, maintenance-friendly connections.

Inspection Chambers: Strategically placed inspection chambers were constructed for ongoing access to ducting systems, allowing efficient maintenance and reducing disruption.

Ducting Systems: High-quality ducting networks were laid to facilitate future electrical and communication cabling, ensuring ease of access and protection of utilities under roadways and footpaths.
